Travelers can enter Bhutan in two ways:

The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is a mandatory daily levy imposed on all international tourists visiting Bhutan. It supports Bhutan’s efforts in sustainable tourism, environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and infrastructure development.
• How much is the Sustainable Development Free(SDF)?
The Royal Government of Bhjuan has reduced the SDF significantly in its effort to promote tourism industry. Tourist will now be required to pay US$100 per person per night for the duration of their stay. This is 50 percent reduction from the previous rate of US$200 per person per night. These revised rates will remain in effect until August 31st, 2027. Children aged 5 to under 12 years will be subject to a reduced SDF of USD 50 per person per night, while the fee is waived for children below 5 years old. For Indian nationals visiting Bhutan, the SDF is set at INR 1,200 per person per night. For tourists of all nationalities visiting the border towns of Samtse, Phuentsholing, Gelephu and Samdrup Jongkhar, the SDF is exempted for up to 24 hours of their stay in these places.
• What currency is used in Bhutan?
The Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN) is the official currency and is pegged 1:1 to the Indian Rupee (INR), which is also widely accepted in Bhutan. However, Indian currency notes of ₹2,000 and some old ₹500 notes may not be accepted in all places. Credit cards are accepted in major hotels and shops, but carrying cash is recommended for rural areas.
• What about of credit card and ATM card in Bhutan?
Yes, you can use credit cards and ATM cards in Bhutan. However, this service may be limited, especially outside major cities like Thimphu and Paro. It is recommended to carry some cash in Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN), or Indian Rupees for smaller purchases and in case you encounter places that don’t accept cards. Some places may also accept US dollars. It is highly recommended to inform your bank beforehand about your travel plans to Bhutan to avoid any issues with card usage abroad.
